Adapter Guide for Universal Hose and Fittings

Return to Adapter Page

Adapter Abbreviations and Sizing

The most common questions we receive concerning hydraulic adapters are:

What do the abbreviations mean?

How are they sized?

What the abbreviations mean:

The abbreviations are simple:

First we have the abbreviations for gender

M = Male

F = Female

Then we have abbreviations for hydraulic connector type:

P = Pipe

J = JIC

O = O-Ring

FF = Flat Face

Note: all of our Flat Face adapters begin with FF. These are grouped together.

There is one more common abbreviation:

X = Swivel

A swivel fitting has a nut allowing the adapter to be screwed onto a hydraulic fitting or adapter.

About size:

The first number after the four digit adapter type is the size of the end mentioned first in the description. The second two digit number is the size of the other end so:

    2404-06-08 MJ-MP  - 2404 is the adapter TYPE (MJ-MP Adapter)

    "06" is the MJ size

    "08" is the MP size.

All hydraulics are measured in 16ths of an inch according to the nominal “tube” size. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense as hydraulics deals with fluid power. Energy is transferred from one place to another via hydraulic fluid so the inside diameter of the hose is an important factor.

That said it should then be obvious a 1/4” hose is 4/16ths or a dash – 04. Let’s forget about the less common sizes and focus on those used regularly:

1/4” = 04 | 3/8” = 06 | 1/2” = 08 | 3/4” = 12 | 1” = 16 | 1 1/4” = 20

Yes there are sizes in-between as well as smaller and larger than the examples here but 90% +/- of your adapter needs will be met with these sizes.

Some customers have asked about an adapter chart. These are hard to come by, however our adapter web page linked below actually makes a fairly decent chart. You may also download a PDF version of the page below. As a pdf file the pictures are clickable just as the pictures on the page below and will open to a page listing the sizes we offer and our current pricing for in-stock* adapters - just like the web page works!

Are "W" Series Fittings Compatible with My Crimper?

Are "W" Series Fittings Compatible with My Crimper?

The "W" Series Hydraulic Crimp Fittings is designed for use on Two-wire and Four-wire Hoses. The crimp specs, however, are DIFFERENT.

The "W" Series Fitting was designed for Adjustable Crimpers only. If you use a positive stop crimper such as a Parker Parkrimp2 or Weatherhead T-420 crimper - the "W" Series is not recommended for these crimpers.

While some people claim to crimp "W" Series fittings with these crimpers - all "W" series manufacturers stipulate different crimp specifications on most sizes. See the Crimp Chart Comparison Below...

"W" Series Crimp Fitting Comparison Chart
The Bottom Line is: If you own an Adjustable Crimper you can crimp "W" Series Fittings.

metric conversions
D165 Crimper Die Buyers Guide
  Crimper dies for the D165 are metric.

The size in mm indicates the smallest diameter that die will crimp to.

WARNING! - a half inch (1/2" or 08) fitting refers to the nominal ID of the hydraulic hose!

To select the proper die for the crimp you want to make - you need to know the final "Crimp OD" of that fitting!

Use the chart below to select the proper die: For best results choose a die that will crimp slightly smaller than the desired Crimp OD.

Attempting to crimp fittings too large for the die will break the die.

Hose Fittings for 100R7, 100R8, and 100R18 Thermoplastic Hose

Hose Fittings for 100R7, 100R8, and 100R18 Thermoplastic Hose

"E" Series

The "E" Series Hose Fittings were created by Weatherhead in the 1970's. This series of fitting is only sold to customers who use Weatherhead Crimpers and who have purchased the correct dies. The "E" series is to be used on 100R7 Reduced OD Hose only on sizes -04 and -06. Size -08 can be used on Standard OD Hose. This series is not recommended for 100R8 or 100R18 style hose.

"Eaton Synflex/ Parker Parflex Series"

The Synflex /Parflex Series Hose Fittings are typically considered a Swage Style Hose Coupling but can also be crimped. This series is compatible to the Synflex 3903 or 903 series or the traditional Parker Parflex 55 Series. This series should not be used on Reduced OD 100R7 Hose. It is compatible with most Manufacturers of 100R18, 100R8 and 100R7 Standard OD Thermoplastic Hose.

"U" Series

The "U" Series Hose Fittings were traditional designed by Weatherhead for 100R2 style Hose. In recent years however Eaton /Weatherhead has approved this Hose Fitting for certain sizes of 100R7, 100R8 and 100R18 hose. You should contact our customer service personnel for details.

"K" Series

The "K" Series is a two piece construction consisting of a Hose Barb with a Ferrule. The Price quoted on our web site includes both pieces. The "K" series in our opinion offers the best performance and appearance regarding Hose Assemblies. The "K" series also offers a huge amount of choices including Metric. The two piece construction provides a very low profile crimp . "K" series Fittings are never to be used in any Positive Stop Crimper such as Parker or Weatherhead. "K" series Fittings must be crimped with an adjustable style Hose Crimper.

How to Protect Your Hydraulic Hose

Why protect your hydraulic hose anyway? To save time and money!

If you have a hose you are constantly replacing due to abrasion or wear issues - it makes sense to prolong the life of that hose!

We offer three ways to protect your hose.

1) Spring Guard - spring guard is added before your hose is made as it will NOT properly fit over an assembled hose. (As with anything, you CAN make it work but we have yet to find a reasonable solution to that so make sure the spring guard goes on when the hose is made.)
Note: Order the size to match your hose - i.e. 1/4" spring guard will fit 1/4" hose.

2) Hose Sleeve - again hose sleeve is best put on when the hose is made, however it IS easier to add to a hose that is already made.You'll need to make sure the sleeve is large enough to fit over the hose end. You can also protect two
or more hoses if the sleeve is large enough. Secure the hose sleeve with zip ties or band clamps.

Use the table below to determine the size you need - feel free to call if you need a size other than what is shown here.

NPS-106 1.06"
NPS-154 1.54"
NPS-185 1.85"
NPS-209 2.09"
NPS-236 2.36"

3) Hose Wrap - can be added either before or after the hose is made! Hose Wrap also offers protection against Ultraviolet (UV) light and abrasion. It also provides protection against crushing. You can bundle two or more hoses with it. Note this wrap can protect many things besides hydraulic hose! You are only limited by your imagination. Hose Wrap comes in two grades - Light Duty or Heavy Wall.

Since you are still here, I'm guessing you've got a hose in your hand and you are stumped on something. The next few pages will help you zip right to the correct hose.

First... What kind of ends does your hose have? (click on the correct response)

How to select a Custom Built Hydraulic Hose - Who's That Girl?

Who's That Girl? Identifying common female fittings.

Okay, both Female ends are the same. The BIG question is... what kind of girl is she? (what type of Female?)

The easiest method for identifying a hydraulic fitting is from the number imprinted on the fitting itself.
The problem is... not all fittings are imprinted. If that's not bad enough - the numbers don't always identify the part!

If you can read the numbers and want to try to identify your fitting, click here.

Otherwise, lets take a look at the four most common fittings you are likely to find.

The four fittings are:

NPT or National Pipe Thread

JIC (also called a 37° Flair)

O Ring Boss (or Boss O Ring)

ORF Seal (or Flat Face or Flat Face O Ring)

Before we get into identifying the females of the hydraulic fitting species, you need to know...

these gals are shy and won't pose for good photos so we have to work around that
All of these fittings are easiest to identify if you can get a look at their Male counterparts.

Male NPT

Male JIC

Male O Ring Boss

Male Flat Face

Notice all of these fittings are distinct and easy to tell apart. If you have an O Ring fitting, give us a call at
434-392-9833 and we'll take it from there.

Now, what if your "little lady" fitting is a NPT or JIC style? No worries. Take another look at the Male JIC

This fellow's "dream girl" is especially made to accommodate this flare.

So if you can imagine or see a funnel type shape on the female, you've got a JIC.

Finally, when you look inside a Female NPT fitting, you will see something that looks like a flat steel washer in the center.

If you can identify a Female JIC then you should have no trouble with a Female NPT.

And if you can tell your O Rings apart, then you can ID all four of the most common fittings.

If you are still having trouble, remember you can always tell an unknown fitting by mating it with a known fitting.

And, of course, you can always call us at 434-392-9833 - we'll be glad to help you through this.
