100R2 or 100R16 Hydraulic Hoses: Does It Really Matter Which I Use?

What’s the difference between 100R2 and 100R16 Two Wire Hydraulic Hoses?

Two Wire Hydraulic Hoses first started being manufactured in the 1940’s. By the early 1990’s most American Manufactures started to offer 100R16 hose. Today the USA market is dominated by some form of Hybrid 100R16 hose with increased working pressures.

SAE100R2 Hose has pretty much been relegated to low grade Import hoses with out of date working pressures.  2SN hose is a new version for the 100R2 product. Both hoses have limited appeal to the USA Market and lag far behind in sales by American manufactures of Hydraulic Hose.

For the general consumer the main difference between 100R2 /2SN hose and 100R16/2SC hose is the outside diameter of the hose. Which affects the crimping diameter. If you are crimping hydraulic fittings to sae100R2 specs you can expect fitting blowoffs when you use 100R16 hose.

SAE100r16 Hybrid hoses have a smaller outside diameter and require a tighter crimp specification. 100R16/ 2SC hose is more flexible then 100R2 hose and typically has higher working pressures.

If you are looking for the cheapest two wire hydraulic hose it will always be an Import 100R2 hose with outdated working pressures and typically does not meet MSHA standards.

The clear choice for a variety of reasons in today’s modern equipment is to purchase some form of 100R16/2SC hydraulic hose.
